How to Use Beard Oil Without the Greasy Feel

Redbeard Grooming Co. Australia · 3 minute read

The quick answer

Start with a few drops, spread them between your palms and massage into the beard and the skin underneath. Comb through, then add more only if the beard still needs it.

Start with less than you think

Redbeard's oil directions begin with a few drops. As a practical starting point, try 1 to 2 drops for a very short beard, 2 to 4 for a medium beard and 4 to 6 for a longer or denser one. These are starting amounts, not fixed doses. Drop size, hair density and the formula all affect how much you need.

If your hands are still coated and your beard looks wet after application, reduce the amount next time. You can always add another drop.

Five steps to a better application

  1. Prepare. Use clean hands and a clean beard. Towel away excess water if you have just washed.
  2. Measure. Put your starting amount into one palm.
  3. Spread. Rub your hands together so the oil covers palms and fingers.
  4. Work it in. Massage beneath the beard first, then move through the lengths and ends. Reach the jaw and chin rather than only smoothing the front.
  5. Finish. Gently comb through to distribute the oil and settle the shape.

When should you apply it?

Pick a time you will remember. After your usual wash or morning grooming works well. Begin with one light application and judge the feel before adding another later in the day.

You do not have to wash your beard again just to apply oil. If you are applying it to a dry beard, distribute it carefully and start sparingly.

What if it feels greasy?

Check the amount first. Also look at what you have already used: oil, butter and balm contribute to the overall feel. Reduce the total rather than blaming one product straight away.

Try a smaller application on the next clean beard and assess it before adding styling products. If the skin is irritated, stop using the product and reassess rather than layering more over it.

Choose the oil you will enjoy using

Scent makes the routine more personal. Prefer citrus and woods? Explore Tortuga. Want oud wood and dark vanilla character? Try Kraken. For a caramel and popcorn profile, look at Sea Shanty.

If you are deciding between profiles, explore the 10ml minis. Available scents and stock are shown on the collection page.

A couple of sensible checks

Read the ingredients, follow the label's patch-test directions and avoid eyes and mouth. Oil is a grooming product, not a treatment for a persistent rash. For ongoing itch, see our beard itch guide.
