How to Use Moustache Wax: Get a Grip on Your Style

Redbeard Grooming Co. Australia · 3 minute read

The quick answer

Take a small amount, warm it between your fingertips until pliable, apply from the centre outwards and shape. Add a little more where needed rather than loading the whole moustache at once.

Start with a clean, dry moustache

Comb the hairs gently into their usual direction before applying wax. That gives you a better idea of what needs control and makes it easier to spread the product evenly.

If you have just applied oil, give it time to settle and keep excess away from the moustache. A heavily coated moustache can make your styling result less predictable.

Scoop, warm, apply, style

  1. Scoop. Take a small amount of Deadman's Grip from the tin. Start sparingly.
  2. Warm. Work it between your fingertips until it becomes pliable. Use the warmth of your hands; no flame or direct heat is needed.
  3. Apply. Work from the centre of the moustache towards the edges. Spread the wax into the hairs rather than leaving a lump on top.
  4. Style. Smooth, shape or gently twist the ends into the look you want. Add a small amount to a stubborn area if needed.

For a natural tidy-up

Focus on hairs that fall over the lip and the areas that stick out. Smooth into place with fingertips and use a small comb if that helps. You do not need a curled handlebar to benefit from wax.

Use less for a restrained finish and build up only where control is needed. The easiest application to fix is one that started small.

For handlebar tips

Distribute a little wax through the ends before shaping. Gently guide the hair into a curve and hold it briefly in position. Work with the length you have; do not pull hard to force a shape the moustache cannot comfortably make.

Deadman's Grip is designed for strong hold, including handlebar styling. The amount and result depend on your moustache, application and conditions. We do not promise a fixed number of hours or a weatherproof result.

Taking it out

Use lukewarm water and a suitable gentle cleanser, working patiently through the moustache and rinsing well. If there is still residue, repeat gently. Do not tug wax out of the hairs or use household solvents.

Dry away excess water and finish with your usual beard grooming routine. Stop using a product if it causes irritation.

Follow the product label's directions, patch test before use and keep it away from eyes and mouth. For pairing Red Harbour with beard products, read our scent guide.

Quick answers

Why is the wax firm in the tin?

A strong hold wax can feel firm before application. Work a small amount between your fingertips until pliable.

Can I use beard balm instead?

Balm is for lighter beard control. Choose moustache wax when defined moustache shaping is the job.

Should I heat the tin?

The product directions call for warming the wax between your fingertips. Direct heat is unnecessary.
